FAQs

Air conditioning problems can be frustrating, so here are answers to some of the most common questions to help you out.

Why Isn’t My Air Conditioner Turning On?

Several factors can make your air conditioner not turn on, including a lack of thermostat batteries, dirty air filters, no power, schedule settings or a blown fuse. First, check your thermostat batteries and ensure it's set to cool mode with the temperature below room temperature.  If you have a programmable thermostat, confirm the schedule settings are correct. You should also verify your unit is plugged in and check your circuit breaker for tripped switches. Make sure your outdoor unit has power and isn't blocked by debris. Sometimes the issue is as simple as a loose connection or a blown fuse. If these steps don't work, contact a professional technician to check it out.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Blowing Cold Air?

The simplest reason your air conditioner is not blowing cold air is that your thermostat is set incorrectly, so try lowering it a few degrees. Your air conditioner may also have dirty filters restricting airflow and reducing cooling efficiency. Another common reason is that the condenser coils in the outdoor unit may be blocked by debris, leaves or dirt. Try cleaning your filters or around the unit to ensure proper airflow. Make sure that all vents throughout your home are open and unblocked. Sometimes, ice buildup on indoor coils prevents cold air, so turn off the system for a few hours and let it thaw. If none of these fixes work, call a professional service to check your refrigerant levels and look for ductwork leaks.

Why Is There an Odor Coming From My Air Conditioner?

The reason for an odor from your air conditioner depends on the kind of smell. Musty or moldy smells usually indicate moisture buildup in your system, often from dirty filters or clogged drain lines, which you can remove by replacing your air filter and cleaning the drain pan. Burning smells suggest electrical issues or overheating components, so turn off your system and call a technician right away. Sweet chemical odors might be a sign of refrigerant leaks, which require professional attention. If you smell a rotten egg, you may have a gas leak if you have gas appliances nearby. If the air smells sour, it may be due to bacteria on the evaporator coils. Regular AC maintenance, including professional cleaning and filter changes, prevents most odor issues and keeps your air fresh.
